Most Irish regional roads are surface dressed: loose chippings rolled into hot bitumen, which gives grip to car tyres and a texture like coarse sandpaper to a 52mm urethane wheel. Add 150 rain days a year and moss on every shaded kerb by October, and you have conditions most wheels sold here were not specified for.
Wheels are the cheapest thing you can change and the change you feel most.
Durometer is one number and it decides most of it
Durometer measures how hard the urethane is. Skateboard wheels use the A scale, higher being harder.
78a to 83a. Soft. These grip damp ground, roll over gravel and cracks without stopping, and absorb the buzz of a rough surface. Slower to accelerate and they will not slide predictably, so they are wrong for tricks and right for travel. The Ocean Pacific Sunset cruiser at €120 uses 83A for that reason, and the Creature Web 2 Relic Mini at €130 is one of very few kids completes fitted with 83a.
92a to 95a. The right default for a first board in Ireland. Hard enough to pop off the ground properly, soft enough not to be thrown off by a stone. The Rocket Complete 8.0 at €40 arrives with 92a, more sensible than most boards costing three times as much.
99a to 101a. Skatepark concrete only. Fast, slidey and unforgiving. The Birdhouse Armanto Bubbles 8.0 at €110 ships with 100A, the one thing about an otherwise well chosen board that needs changing if it will live on the street.
Wheel size changes how the board feels
52mm to 54mm is the standard street and park range. The board sits low, flip tricks come round quickly, the wheels are light. Almost every complete uses it.
58mm and up is cruising territory. Bigger wheels carry momentum and roll over cracks that would stop a small one. The Madrid Picket cruiser at €155 and the Hydroponic DT 3.0 longboard at €150 both work on this principle.
The trade is height, weight and inertia. Big soft wheels take longer to spin up, raise your centre of gravity and make a kickflip lazier. Small hard wheels punish you on anything but smooth ground. If you are still choosing a board, the deck size finder sorts the shape first.
Irish surfaces punish hard wheels specifically
Three local conditions point the same direction.
Surface dressed chipseal has an exposed aggregate texture. A hard wheel transmits every chip into your feet and stops dead on a small stone rather than rolling over it. Being pitched forward off a stationary board is how most beginners get hurt.
Damp is close to permanent from October to April and often not obvious, since a footpath under trees stays wet all day. Hard urethane on wet tarmac lets go with no warning, which is the difference between a slide you can ride out and one you cannot.
Moss and algae grow on the shaded edge of every estate road. Slick, the same colour as wet tarmac, and a soft wheel finds grip there where a hard one finds none.
None of that makes hard wheels bad. It makes them wrong for the surface most people here ride on.
ABEC ratings tell you almost nothing
Bearings are sold on a number that measures the wrong thing.
ABEC is a dimensional tolerance standard. It grades how precisely a bearing’s dimensions are held, assuming it spins on a fixed shaft in a machine tool at high rpm. It says nothing about steel grade, race hardness, seal quality, lubricant or side load resistance. A skateboard bearing takes side loads at low rpm in the rain, close to the opposite. An Abec 9 from a nameless brand is regularly worse than an Abec 5 from a company that makes bearings for a living.
What actually matters:
- Spacers. An 8mm spacer between the two bearings stops the axle nut pinching them out of line. Without one you run slightly crushed bearings forever. A couple of euro, and most people do not have them.
- Lubricant. Oil spins faster and washes out in the wet. Grease lasts. In Ireland, grease.
- Seals. Rubber shields keep water and grit out. Metal shields, on the cheapest sets, do not.
Clean them once or twice a year. Shields off, soak in white spirit, dry, a smear of grease in each, reassemble. Plenty of people replace serviceable wheels when the real problem was a €15 bearing set full of grit.
Wheelbite, risers and the bolts to buy with them
Wheelbite is the wheel touching the underside of the deck mid turn. The board stops. You do not.
Three fixes: tighten the trucks, fit smaller wheels, or add riser pads. On standard trucks, up to 54mm needs nothing. 55mm to 58mm wants a 3mm to 6mm riser. Above 58mm wants 6mm or more, and cruiser setups over 60mm often use a 12mm wedge.
The part people forget is bolts. A 6mm riser needs bolts 6mm longer or the nut will not engage. Buy them together, about €5.
Flat spots, coning and rotating
Flat spots come from locking a slide with hard wheels on rough ground. You grind a flat facet onto one side and the board vibrates at every speed after that. It never wears back round. Once a wheel has a real flat spot it is done.
Coning is the slow one. The inside edge wears faster because that is where the load sits, and the wheel turns into a truncated cone. It happens to every wheel and makes the board pull to one side.
Rotate in an X pattern every couple of months: front left swaps with rear right, front right with rear left, each wheel flipped so the worn side faces out. Ten minutes, and it adds months to a set. Replace when coning brings the bearing seat near the edge, when there is a flat spot, or when the board feels sluggish.
What it costs
Four wheels is €30 to €50 for a known brand, €25 for something serviceable. Bearings €12 to €20 decent, €30 to €40 for good ones with grease and rubber seals. Risers €5 to €10, bolts €5, spacers €3.
The full fix on a complete with the wrong wheels is €50 to €70 including bearings, about €35 for wheels alone. On a €110 board that sounds like a lot until you ride it. It is why a €40 board with sensible wheels often feels better on an Irish road than a €130 one specified for a Californian skatepark.
