The most common mistake in a stunt scooter purchase is buying the bar too tall so the child grows into it. It sounds sensible and it is the one decision that makes the scooter close to unusable.
A bar spin requires the rider to throw the bars a full rotation and catch them with the deck still under their feet. Grips at chest height leave the elbows nowhere to go, so the bars never come round. They try it two hundred times, fail every time, and conclude they are not good at it. The scooter was never the right size.
Bar height goes between the waist and the lower ribs
Stand the rider on the deck, not on the floor. The deck sits roughly 8cm up, so measuring from the ground gives a number wrong by the width of a hand.
With them standing on it, the grips should land between the belly button and the bottom of the ribcage. Waist is the safe end. Ribs suits a rider doing more technical work who wants the bars closer. Some numbers. The Chilli Pro Base S at €119.95 runs a short bar for five to nine year olds. The Longway Adam Pro at €120 uses a 450mm bar for six to ten year olds, with a 75kg rider limit. The Chilli Pro Reaper Grim has an 84cm bar, about the ribs on an average eight year old and at the chest on a six year old. The North Satisfact G5 Pro runs 622mm chromoly bars suiting nobody much under 150cm.
Between sizes, go shorter. A bar under the waist costs a little leverage. A bar at the chest stops half the trick list working.
Growing room is what bar cuts are for
Bars are a consumable and cheap relative to the scooter. A replacement set is €40 to €70, and most can be cut down or swapped in twenty minutes with an allen key and a hacksaw. So the answer to a growing child is the right scooter now and new bars in eighteen months, spent learning tricks rather than fighting the geometry.
Four kilograms is where learning stops or starts
A tailwhip asks the deck to travel a full circle around the headtube and arrive back under the rider’s feet, in the air, in about half a second. Every extra hundred grams makes it harder to start and harder to catch. Around 4kg is the line for a child who weighs thirty or thirty five kilos themselves. Below it, spinning tricks are difficult. Above it, discouraging.
Compare the Chilli Pro Reaper Grim at 3.8kg against the North Satisfact G5 Pro at 4.6kg. That is 800 grams, about 20%, and picking both up makes it obvious. On a nine year old the North will not come round. On a strong fifteen year old the same weight reads as planted and stable.
The North is not a worse scooter. At €230 with a one piece deck and chromoly bars it is the most durable thing on the site, aimed at a rider who breaks things. Weight is what durability costs.
Compression is the thing nobody explains in the shop
Compression is how fork, headset and bars are held together under load. Two families.
Threaded, on cheap scooters, uses a threaded fork with a nut tightened against the headset. Every landing tries to loosen it. Within months there is a knock at the front under braking, and tightening it either does nothing or crushes the bearings. Hence the rattly feel.
HIC and IHC run a compression bolt down through the bar into a shim or starnut in the fork, so the assembly sits under constant preload and the clamp only stops the bars rotating. It does not work loose. HIC uses oversized bars with a shim, IHC standard bars and a smaller starnut, and IHC turns up on scooters for younger riders because the parts are lighter.
Both are fine. The Chilli Pro Base S uses HIC at €119.95, about as cheap as HIC gets. Below roughly €100 you are buying threaded, and the front end will be knocking by the spring.
Folding hinges and adjustable clamps belong on a commuting scooter
Every joint you add is somewhere for play to develop, and at a skatepark all the force in the world arrives at the headtube.
A folding mechanism is a hinge at the base of the neck, sitting in the load path of every landing. It loosens, then creaks, then at some point folds while you are riding it. An adjustable clamp does the same at the top, slipping a few millimetres mid trick.
Neither is an argument against folding scooters, only about where they belong. On a scooter that goes to school and lives under a desk, folding is the entire point. At a park, buy fixed.
Supermarket scooters crack at the neck
Look where the headtube meets the deck on a cheap scooter. Almost all are extruded aluminium with the headtube welded on, and that weld is where they fail. On a €60 scooter the walls are thin and the weld is a bead run quickly by a machine. One season of dropping in on the same quarter pipe and it opens up. You hear it as a click on every compression before you see it.
Better scooters use a heavier gauge tube and a gusset. The best use a one piece deck with no join at the headtube at all, which is part of what €230 buys on the North. Cheap is fine for riding to the shop. Not at a park, and the failure is not gradual.
Upgrade wheels first, then bars, then never the deck
When a scooter starts feeling slow, the wheels are the answer. Cheap wheels have plastic cores that flex and soft urethane that chunks, and a decent 110mm set with an alloy core transforms how it rolls for €40 to €60. Going to 120mm usually means a new brake too, since the standard one is cut for the smaller wheel.
Bars come second, mostly because the rider grew or bent the old ones. Chromoly if they land hard, alloy otherwise.
The deck comes last and usually never. It is the dearest part and the least likely to be holding anyone back.
